Thrifting Culture

By: Natalie Medina

Thrifting culture has been on a rise in recent years. However, many privileged people have taken advantage of cheap clothes and are reselling on sites like Depop, Mercari, Poshmark, etc. I am one of many people who needed thrift stores in order to get a new change of clothes. Now that I am older, I can see and take into consideration the pros and cons of thrifting culture.

Can you spot the difference between these two "thrift stores"?

Although hard to tell to the naked eye, and to a beginner thrifter, the first picture is usually the store that overprices their items. The second picture is more of an affordable thrift store. How do I know this? Experience and an ugly deep dive into reseller stores.

By the looks and comments on this video of a TikTok displaying the resellers in a goodwill bin sale, people obviously hate it. The thrifting culture although sustainable, has been indenting into the prices of an already high economy that gives damage to those who survive only on thrift stores.

The good side being that more people are disregarding fast fashion. However, those who truly appreciate the thrifting life are in shambles. Those people who want to make a quick buck are truly destroying the lives of others and upping the price on what used to be thrift stores, now changing to "vintage" stores.

Nonetheless, here are some thrift stores that I can't wait to visit near L.A.

So, for those people who actually enjoy thrifting for themselves and their closet, please share your thoughts on what thrifting has become.

Stay tuned for next weeks post!
